For Them She Risked It All

Calley Jean Trout was murdered by her husband Julio Garay in 2020, while shielding her three children from bullets. The violence within the home was ongoing and she knew that by attempting to escape that she would likely be killed. But her love for her children and hope for a better future for them, gave her the courage to try to leave.

Calley did everything in her power to seek protection, accessing victim services, filing a restraining order and exercising her rights provided by the law. Unfortunately, all of that was not enough to save her life. Beloved Survivors Trauma Recovery Center and Calley's family call for a higher level of community responsibility in addressing the issue of Domestic Violence.

Domestic Violence does not occur in a vacuum. There are always others who are aware of what is going on. Those onlookers miss valuable opportunities to intervene by either aiding the aggressor or by simply turning the other way. If our community resolves to do better, lives can and will be saved.
